How long had it been since he challenged the Gym, beating Tina and relaxed in Fort Magique? A week? Seamus sighed as he stared at the base of the mountain, completely bundled up. His lab coat was replaced with the proper winter gear, and his usual suitcase was gone as well, using a hiker's backpack to prepare for the terrible amount of travel he had to pull off on foot. It looked dreadful; the sudden change in temperature, the bitter air, knowing that Winter was coming so it would be at its worst.
Even worse, his boss had contacted him moments before he decided to depart. Apparently the organization was curious about Pokemon interactions and how they varied with each region, so they wanted actual pictures of them in these mountains. Seamus could only wonder why they asked him of all people to do this job, as he had little skills with photography, but he had to relent and sigh. He was probably the only one with a strong enough team to get into this area in the first place.
He wished himself luck as he started the long and lonely trek up the mountain, having his battle plan set up in his mind. He had a map that told him where there important spots were; about two rest houses were along the trail, and there were rumored hot springs around each area for warmth. He'd try and plan each hike so he made it to the rest house before dark. It was the only way, unless he found immediate shelter before hand.

A certain Pokémon though wandered around aimlessly trying to find something. She was bleeding from one of her paws as it seemed that she had just made it out of a tussle with another Pokémon as she walked around aimlessly searching. Her left leg was a bit crippled while she was moving and ignoring everything around her. She did not even notice Seamus when she started to slash at the snow close to him. It seemed that she was in a desperate search of something. But what could it have been? Seamus felt his legs feel sore, never being in the best health as the wind whistled above him. He was going to have to be careful on this hike, lest he somehow overwork himself to the point of having a heart attack. It was a shame he couldn't be as youthful as he once was, but he was determined to make it through the route alive. The conditions were rough, he wasn't sure what to expect, but at the first sound of life he flinched and looked around, needing a hiding place. His feet crunched through the snow as he hid behind the safety of a large pine tree, staring as the looming figure of a bear wandered through the snow.
Crunch. Crunch. Snow being pressed into the ground, he could hear it loudly as he shivered and wrapped his scarf tighter around his body. He'd have to be careful around this type of Pokemon, realizing the kind of danger he was in. "Steel, stay beside me." He held the Pokeball to his lips, whispering the order before letting it open. The Pokeball popped open, revealing an Excadrill that hardly went up to his hips. It was a small Pokemon in general, but Steel was well built for this terrain. <She's bleeding, dude.> Steel commented, at first thinking they were in danger when he got a look at the Ursaring. What was she doing anyways?
The Excadrill narrowed his eyes as he caught onto the limp in her left leg, increasingly aware of her wounds as he felt compelled to help. To talk. To go near her and do something kind. "Stay." Seamus said bitterly, wanting to watch what she was digging for in the first place. She wanted something, and the snow was being slashed at. What was going on? Seamus decided to watch and see, as Steel debated going on to help her regardless of his trainer's orders.

URSARING appeared ! The Ursaring hadn't noticed the human quite yet, continuing to dig at the same spot with her massive claws. Eyes widened a little as she seemed to spot something, leaning down to stick her nose in the hole she made before she flinched, backing up again before slashing madly at the snow and letting out an enraged roar laced with grief. The more she dug, the more it revealed what was underneath; her baby Teddiursa had been injured by the Pokémon she was fighting, and in her absence had frozen to death in the cold.
The bear stopped when her claws almost damaged the frozen corpse even more; then she looked at her paws, trembling with grief, for a long moment. Then she let out another roar, louder than the last, pointing her snout towards the cold white sky. It was then that she caught the scent of the human, which made her turn her head and catch Seamus and his Pokémon in her gaze.
An unintelligible snarl left her as she turned her mass of body towards the two intruders, then suddenly raced at them, not caring who she hit as she lashed out with her claws every which way. Her cub's death had ignited a grief-driven rampage.

Wondering if he should take out his camera, Seamus stared as the Ursaring started to dig even more furiously in the snow until she finally stopped. Both trainer and Pokemon leaned in a little closer, practically touching one another as they stared at the faint speck of brown in the snow. It was very hard to see, but the Ursaring seemed to be in utter shock at the sight. It was trembling; frozen with grief, and that much the Excadrill could tell. Seamus figured that she saw something very awful as well, also taking note of the blood on her paws as he watched in concern. No, there was no need to take a picture of something like this. No one would be satisfied with a single Pokemon anyways. <Something's wrong.> Steel reported, moving out from his shelter as he took a few tentative steps closer to the Ursaring, now seeing the dead Teddiursa cub in the snow.
He cringed back in horror, before his face turned into a somber, sad one. He liked kids, the Excadrill really really did. It was why he joined Seamus in the first place, to make sure the Jumpluff Seamus owned would grow up to be happy. Seeing the Teddiursa simply reminded him of that small Hoppip he met at that time, lowering his head in pity. Then the enraged roar came, perking up with sudden alertness as the Ursaring charged towards him and his trainer with a furious leer. She was out to kill, wasn't she?! <Whoa! Hey lady, calm down! Calm down!> He demanded, taking all of the hits against his new steely armor as he cried out towards the furious mother.
<Stop this, you're already hurt!> She was mad, and probably needed a slap in the face. Since when did anyone that was angry listen simply to reason? Claws glowing furiously as his metal coat activated, he charged at the bear and aimed at her good side, attempting to force her down even if she was stronger than him. Seamus could only watch, concerned at how close he was to being hit by the enraged bear. He knew it was a bad idea to approach her without a Pokemon; she reeked of danger.

URSARING appeared ! Ursaring paid no mind to the Excadrill's shouts to calm down. Her mind was in turmoil; her baby had hardly seen the world before he died! And to think that he was her only cub, it tore at her entire being. Her claws were hitting armor, but she didn't relent, almost savoring the feeling of claws scraping armor before stopping, panting only for a moment. Steel was right; she was already hurt, but what difference did it make to her? In the state she was in, she would settle for even death.
The metal claws tore a bloody gash in her side, causing her to stumble in that direction in recoil. But oddly, she didn't cry out in pain or roar or anything. She was just silent, turning her head to look at Steel again. You'd think that some sense had been smacked into her just then, but she wasn't stopped yet. Her sorrowful expression became enraged and even demonic as she aimed a scary face at Steel. Then she lashed out at him again, using a Slash with her fearsome claws. She wasn't rational enough to realize that her normal type moves were futile against his metallic armor.

When the Ursaring stopped to think about what was going on, Steel stopped with his Metal Claw as he retracted his arms, looking at her hesitantly. What was she thinking? Was she gonna stop? The Excadrill was not the type to jump into a fight, never especially having the muse for it because there were better things to do, but he had the care to defend himself. The Ursaring simply stayed there for a moment, and he found himself lowering his guard as he tried to speak. <Fighting won't bring your kid back.> He said softly, taking a step forward with a sympathetic gaze.
Then she slashed him in the stomach, making him cringe and stumble backwards as he winced from the pain. He had good defenses, but damn she was a brick house. <Something tells me you don't care.> He grunted, wheezing from the past attack since it nearly made him lose the air in his lungs. Seamus watched, hands clenching against the tree as he took note of the wounds between each Pokemon. The Ursaring was in bad condition, and he doubted that his Excadrill would get much experience from the match. Honestly, it seemed like a waste letting such a Pokemon die out here. 'I could catch it.' Out of sympathy, at least. It probably would never battle, considering its mental condition, but he could attempt to save it.
Steel wondered if attacking was a good idea, but the Ursaring was stronger and full of rage, making her unpredictable. Dangerous. There was a chance he wouldn't be able to escape from the match, and he felt like giving up wasn't even an option. <Ehh, I hate feeling like a hypocrite.> He grunted, giving up on trying to reason with her as he bolted towards her with an X-Scissor.

Ursaring threw her head back and released a grief stricken roar from her throat. It sounded like thunder over the horizon and suddenly, after taking the X-Scissor, she returned to her child’s frozen body. A sob sounded from her throat and a bout of Fake Tears cascaded down her cheeks. Well they weren’t fake, they were real, but they had the same effect as a Fake Tears.
“My baby!” She wailed mournfully, “My beautiful baby! No!” She seemed to shiver with rage for a moment, and then she returned her attention to the Excadrill. The weakness flowing through her bones made her think, well what if it was her fault? Had she been too weak or too neglectful of her precious child?
Confusion turned back to rage and she stared at the earth mole for a moment. “It’s all my fault. It has to be,” she shook her head in defeat, still crying profusely. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be taking this out on you, but please just let me fight you... I deserve to be struck down. Maybe then I’ll join my baby... I never even got to say goodbye!” The mother sucked in a breath. Her eyes glowed with a dark aura and she sent pulses of unavoidable energy towards the Ground type.

It wasn't often when the Excadrill got himself involved in fights that were this serious and emotionally difficult, and in fact this was probably the hardest thing he had to do. He looked at the Ursaring with sympathetic eyes, stopping his attacks as long as she stopped hers. She was getting delusional; unable to attack over the grief of her child. He shivered at the sight, not knowing what to make of it as she grieved. Seamus's eyes lit open when he realized what was going on, and saw how this was possibly related to the mission he had at hand. Pokemon empathy; now that was worth a shot, wasn't it? He steadied his camera carefully, feeling a twinge of pity for the Ursarring as the snow blowing around made the camera glass a bit foggy. However, he was sure that this would be a good shot.
Include the mother and her baby. Hold the camera still. He took multiple shots in a hurry until the momma bear changed her mind and let the Teddiursa rest. He'd have to look at the shots later to see if they were any good, but hopefully the context would be understood. The Excadrill hesitated when the Ursaring turned angry again, expecting a blow right away because she was taking it out on him. She didn't do it immediately; she spoke first.
It was all very sad; the way she justified the match and herself, even wanting to join her cub. It was just...sad. Steel was overridden with shock as the Faint Attack made him stumble down face first into the snow, groaning as he pushed himself up and looked at her. <You shouldn't die from something like this...it's not over.> The Excadrill tried to reason with her this time, seeing that she was talking to him. Her attacks weren't the most effective anyways, so he prepared himself to be lashed out at once more.

you know i can make your a wild Pokémon ! >Just do it!< She yowled out, tears streaming down her face still. This was emotional, not only to her, but to the other team as well. It was one weird thing to be thrown in, that was certain. >I want to be with her!< Another yowl escaped her throat being being followed with another bellow as more tears raked her body. She just wanted to be with her baby! Her poor baby! To meet him again would be a blessing, a wonderful act from the people basically telling her no. So, the Ursaring basically accidentally let out another Fake Tears attack, seeing as how real tears practically fell under that category as well. Shaking her head and scattering tears everywhere, the Ursaring reared back and Slashed in the Excadrill's general area. Anything to get him to hit her back! Heartbreaking. It really was. As the Excadrill looked on hopelessly at the Ursaring as she used a real fake tears on him, he found himself stunned with empathy. How was he supposed to react to this? His parents never prepared him. Nothing ever prepared him. He flinched at each time the mother spoke, hearing her pain and somehow feeling responsible for it. She lashed out at him again with another slash, and he really was starting to get tired at this rate. He panted from the battle, claws out and extended as he lowered his head, looking into the bear's eyes. She really did want to get attacked, didn't she? He felt bad. She was so weak, it was sad to look at. So so sad.
<It doesn't feel right.> He twitched, even if it did somehow appear to be an act of mercy by finishing her off. Would the blood ever get off of his claws if he did this? Metaphorically, at least. Seamus didn't care; this wasn't going anywhere as he finished with the last of his shots, getting the view of the tearful Ursaring and the sympathetic Excadrill in his photos. "Earthquake." He called out, shivering from the cold as he hid behind the tree.
Steel hesitated at the command-- wasn't that a really bad idea to try out on a mountain? The snow would fall and cover them all! Seamus didn't change his expression, hiding behind the tree for all of the protection it could give him. Steel didn't have a choice, huh? He held his claws together to form one giant drill, then slammed them into the ground. The land trembled massively, making the trees shake and the snow fall out of them. Luckily they were closer to the base of the mountain, so there was less snow to tumble down on them. The Excadrill was quick to retreat back to Seamus after the attack, watching as some of the snow fell near them as it slid down the slopes. It should've been enough to take out the Ursaring, at least.

But by some divine miracle, or unfortunate event, the earthquake hit her and only made her unconscious as she lay on the ground and saw an image of her daughter. The only issue was that whenever the mother Ursaring tried to reach her daughter, she was unable to do so as the grasp of her daughter kept fading from her hand.
She tried over and over again as a protective mother, but every time the Teddiursa just fell from her grasp. Eventually, the Teddiursa turned and spoke to her. >Mom, it's okay. It was not your fault!< The baby said which helped soothe the Ursaring, although she still believed that she caused the death.
Now, the Ursaring simply stood there on the ground, available to capture as she was still alive. But she was a ticking time bomb so Seamus should be cautious if he does decide to capture her...

For some reason, as the Earthquake settled down and made the mountain still once more, the giant mother bear seemed to be at peace. At least slightly, as her unconscious and peaceful expression seemed to be void of the previous grief and regret she once felt. Seamus and Steel finally emerged from their cover, getting closer to the bear to check up on her. "The wounds are bad." He stated, noticing how she was still bleeding out of her paw. She would need medical attention somehow, if she was going to be ok physically during his trip. She was awfully lucky that he was only near the base of the mountain, and the Pokémon Center was not far off at all. In fact, he even knew the way since he recently passed right by it.
The Excadrill simply sighed and sat right by her, watching her with the same pained expression because the battle had been so conflicting. So tough. It felt terrible for him, what a strain to have witnessed this. Seamus was most likely going to catch her, and he had to wonder if she would be alright under his care. His care wasn't the most emotionally satisfying, that was for sure. Seamus had a Great Ball in his hands, seeing that she was much bigger than what a normal Pokeball would contain.
"Let's try this." He stated, pressing the Great Ball to her furry, large arm in an attempt to capture her. If it didn't work, he could always try again. It wasn't as if he was in a hurry or anything, especially when it was so early in the morning.

But the light was still blinking heavily as the ball stood still, as the Ursaring seemed too tired to fight the capture at all. The ball made no movement at all, almost as if it was signaling that the capture would prevail as there was no struggle to prevent such a thing.
But immediately, out of nowhere the ball suddenly popped open and stood right beside the Ursaring as it seemed to have rejected the capture. The sad bear was so pathetic that she could not even be captured by a worthy trainer. This was seriously a weird and depressing sight to see as she did not fight the capture at all (and was too weak to fight it anyways).
Would Seamus try again? Or would he just leave her be, to live the rest of her life in misery?

So the Ursaring had decided to fight off the great ball, huh? Seamus looked at the normal looking capsule with a debating look. Was she perhaps too big to fit in the sphere? Too strong for it? He couldn't be sure, but there was no reason why he couldn't try again. After all, it wasn't as if it had broken or anything. Picking up the navy blue Great Ball from the snow with gloved hands, he gently brushed it off to make sure it looked ok, mostly to look into the off-chance that it was somehow dysfunctional. "I'll keep trying." Stubborn old man, especially because he felt guilty now by leaving such a predator to waste away in the snow. What a waste of a life, nothing could even eat it or study it out here!
<If you say so.> The Excadrill stated with an unamused reply, resisting the urge to stretch and act like nothing important was going on. That was pretty insensitive though, wasn't it? He could only act like a fatass for so long until the guilt ripped apart at him, making him think he was some kind of terrible Pokemon. He watched solemnly as Seamus tried to use the Great Ball again, this time tapping it at the bear's head (implying location mattered).
If this didn't work, then he could always try the Ultra and Heavy balls he had around. Save the Great one for later or something. He mused about it before nodding, deciding on the plan. He was going to try not to waste his supplies while he could out here, though with so many begging Pokemon these days, he wondered how strict he'd be with that plan.

The ball hit her and opened up, sending a red light to engulf the bear all over again as it propped on the floor and stood still. This time, the ball made a sudden movement, as if the Ursaring was waking up. But it also seemed to have tightened it's grasp until it finally clamped shut and the flickering light in the middle went off. The Ursaring was now a property of Seamus.
And fitting with some kind of divine law, the surrounding became completely peaceful as if all the troubles of life had gone away. It was almost as if the capture signaled a Golden Age or something as nothing out of the ordinary occurred. That must have been an interesting study that Seamus could record, as the capture of this one pokemon caused everything else to be peaceful and incredibly tranquil.
What now?

With the Ursaring captured, Seamus had to admit that the area around him seemed more tranquil than treacherous. The Excadrill did have to wonder about what caused the wounds on the Ursaring in the first place, and if that creature was still around, but they could worry about that later. The ground type looked up at his trainer for further instructions, not sure why he was needed out here in the first place if he was only going to freeze his rear end off out here. "We'll take a minor break." Seamus decided, since the Pokemon Center was hardly far at all. Returning Steel into his Primer Ball, he wandered back down the hill, following the trail of smoke that led him to the Pokemon Center he saw at the beginning.
All he really did was have Steel get a brief check up, but he really wanted to leave the Ursaring here. Maybe for a day, if anything. "I'll pick her up then." He nodded to the nurse, knowing that even if the Ursaring needed time to emotionally heal, her physical wounds could be tended to rather quickly. He'd save a slot in his current party for her if he could, but until then, he wanted to avoid having her in any strenuous situation.
Back on the path, all by his lonesome he passed the spot where he had battled the Ursaring with slightly interested eyes. The dead Teddiursa was still half covered in the snow, looking as pitiful as ever. It was a disappointment to see, forcing himself to look away before he got too carried away. Emotions this early on his trip would only bring him down, making each step harder to take. "Not getting a heart attack from this, I swear to god." He grunted as he kept a slow pace along the trail, constantly on the look out for signs of life. After all, he still had the mission of taking pictures of Pokemon that he had to do.

GURDURR & BRONZOR APPEARED ! Off in the near distance, a Gurdurr grasping a huge tree in his arms appeared to be hitting something violently with it. However, he was actually using it as a hammer, smashing a crude wooden stake into the snow and the dirt underneath so that it would stick up by itself. It was the fourth one that he had placed, all of them lining up like four corners of a square. The stake seemed to have hit a deep rock though, but instead of actually thinking rationally and getting the stone out of the way, he continued to smash it into the ground.
A Bronzor nearby was watching him build this shelter for her, since she was getting too much ice in her system with all this bad weather lately. <I'd help you, but I don't have arms.> The metal pokemon remarked lamentfully, not realizing that the Gurdurr was acting pretty dumb at the moment.

Of all of the Pokemon to possibly appear, it was the evolved form of a Pokemon that annoyed the crap out of him in the City of Water, and a Bronzor. Naturally the Pokemon out here were much stronger than the ones he had, so he had to be careful if he ever intended to start a Pokemon battle, but that wasn't his main mission today. Instead, he took curiosity in the Gurrdurr's purpose with the consistent hammering. Was this Pokemon a natural at building habitats for other Pokemon? It had the basic structure for a hut, the formation from what he could tell. It seemed to be a bit repetitive over one of the four wooden planks that were hammered deep into the ground, and he had to wonder what was making such a problem.
Taking a different angle of the situation by walking around them a bit, exposing himself without trying to hide, he could see the issue. Why was it trying to hammer a plank of wood through stone? That wasn't going to work. The Bronzor didn't seem to notice the issue either, instead simply hovering nearby to watch the dull fighting type hammer uselessly at the rock. Seamus wasn't sure if he could keep watching this sight, really wanting to fix it, but he didn't trust himself near such a large fighting type. It was simply so big and bulky...like it could easily kill him.
Would it be more threatening to send out a Pokemon for his own protection though, which would've frightened the two Pokemon either to flee or battle? He didn't want to pick a fight, but he'd be happy to advise. "E-Excuse me." He said hesitantly, not sure if the Pokemon could understand him. "You should move that rock out of the way." He froze, feeling stiff and awkward as he talked to the wild Pokemon. This was so unnatural; who talked to wild Pokemon anyways? It wasn't something he normally did, but maybe because it was so human-like, it would understand somehow.

A WILD POKE'MON ! The Bronzor glared up at the man who dared to even look at his way. He seemed to speak in his human tongue, which was something that was complete gibberish to him and it seemed to make him angry. The Gurrdurr hammered the crude stake a few more times, murmuring his name over and over. "Gurr... Durr... Gurr... Durr..." but the rock refused to give way under his constant pressure. The Bronzor, luckily, happened to be listening to the human. Thankfully, she went to school, and she understood human tongue. >I'm assuming that he isn't fairly smart...< she mumbled, looking up at the blue-eyed man. The faint traces of a smile seemed to peak through, but she looked sternly at the Gurrdurr, switching back to poke'mon speak. All she simply told him was that there was a rock under the stake, and how he should probably move it. Sadly, that only made him angry farther and hammer harder.
