Dart was the first to notice the new odor. He pricked right up and sniffed loudly. < Woah! What's that smell? > he asked, bounding forwarda few paces, not put off at all by the rank smell. Atsina frowned. "What are you talking about Dart?" she asked, and lengthened her stride to move forward. Hitting the stench was like hitting a brick wall.
Atsina's eyes flew open, and then squinted fiercely. Her hand flew to her nose, and she staggered back. "Oh god. Ugh." she swore, turning away. Her eyes were starting to water as she fought to breath through her mouth and not her nose.
Paleo, having no nose, was not enticed or put off. He hovered uncertainly, unsure of what was causing such a reaction in his trainer. He'd never seen her stagger around as she was now doing, and he looked around wildly for the source of this new affliction.
< Dart, what's happening? What is it? > Paleo called.
The zigzagoon shook itself. < Over here! It's a pokemon. It smells really bad. > he said, moving up close to the skunk pokemon. Paleo followed and stared down at it. It didn't seem like a threat.
Atsina was keeping her distance, hoping that the Stunky would move along and head away from here. There would be no othe rpokemon to catch now that it was around.

A strange feeling crept over the Stunky as it realized that all the Pokemon around it were stareing. The Zigzagoon the closest to it, and it quickly identified the playful raccoon as harmless. They were common Pokemon after all, so it was hard to see them as aggressive. It strained its head to look up at Paleo, and labeled this one as safe to be around. If it was friends with the Zigzagoon, then it didn't see a reason to get nervous.
<I smell bad? Heh, sorry about that. I was in a fight earlier and I had to get away, can you still smell it? Ah, your just not used to it. > It waved a paw out, as if having the ability to smell was a pitiful thing. It lowered its tail unconsiously, showing that it meant no harm to the trainer and her Pokemon crew.
The smell was actually wavering away, making it easier to breathe in and out through the nose. Not that the Stunky could tell, being so used to the constant scent it carried around just made it invisible to it.

Atsina took several deep breaths, in no condition to speak at the moment. So her pokemon did the talking to this newcomer. < Well, you don't smell to me. > Paleo pointed out. Having no nose could be advantageous at times. Judging based on Atsina's reaction, being able to smell could have serious drawbacks. He hovered lower, to investigate this new pokemon a bit closer.
Dart was almost disappointed that the smell was going away. He dashed around the skunk pokemon. < A fight huh? I was just in a fight. See, the trainer caught me. I'm gonna be a trainer's pokemon now, and get strong. ? he boasted, pausing to wag his large tail happily.

<You don't smell it?> The Stunky asked, a bit surprised at this fact. Turning to examine the Bronzor a bit more, it nodded. Understanding that Paleo didn't quite possess a nose of any sort, so how could it detect scent of any kind?
Feeling a bit more cheerful, the Stunky pawed at Dart, attempting to see if it could slow down the playful Zigzagoon. Stopping only when Dart had stopped his constant running, which had been making it a tad dizzy.
<Your gonna get strong? Lucky you, that means that you get to fight a lot. Heh, I get that same kind of life. Bird Pokémon are a little crabby in this weather, so they end up fighting with whoever they see. I put a stop to them though.> It snickered as it said this, not particularly minding that Dart was bragging. Since it was doing the exact same thing, just being a little more subtle in it.
<So, that means you have to fight Pokémon to get stronger? I think I scared them all away.> The Stunky noted, with a little bit of regret as it said this. Not being able to help feeling a bit guilty from messing up the trio's journey through Cheyenne.

Dart frowned. < Yeah, you did. > he frowned, looking around. His whole body sort of sagged. Paleo, though was not as obvious with his needs. Unlike Dart he could see beyond just a quick fight and a chance to get stronger. He floated closer. < That's alright, there's lots of other places to look. What sorts of pokemon do you normally see around here? > he asked.
Atsina had recovered, and walked a bit closer, crouching down to seem less put off by the pokemon. She smiled apologetically. "Forgive my reaction, please. It's just a bit strong for humans." she said quietly.

Chuckling a little bit at Atsina, it nodded in acknowledgment. It was used to this type of reaction, so no harm would be done. The only reason it didn't respond by talking was because it assumed that she couldn't understand Poke speak.
<Pokemon I normally see? Well, this time of year bugs are hiding away... You'll see a lot of birds around here. They're just too stubborn to migrate to the warmer places, that or they're just too weak to make the journey. > It noted, cocking its head to the side as it thought about the recent attack it faced. They were territorial birds that didn't give up easily, not unless you bring the fight to them, hard.
<Uhh, lets see...I see a lot of Marill and Azurill, they can handle the cold without a sweat. Amazing, since they are practically bald.> It snorted as it said this, just thinking about the bald creatures brought a small smile to its face.
<And, there's me. > It laughed, jumping up in the air as it spoke. Becoming a lot more playful now that there were other Pokémon to chat with.
<I could make it up to you, for scaring them all away. I'll fight one of ya, training wouldn't hurt me. It would only make me a better Stunky.> It smiled to both Dart and Paleo, wagging its tail like a puppy dog. Acting a bit excited to show off its moves to the cocky little Zigzagoon, it wasn't hurt from its last fight, so it could handle this.

Both of Atsina's pokemon nodded vigorously at this proposal. But it was dart who spoke first, earning the right to fight. < Yeah! I'll fight you! > he cried, wagging his tail playfully as the stunky jumped around. Paleo frowned, disappointed. Atsina also frowned. "Dart, you're not really healed from the battle where I caught you. I think Paleo should handle this fight." she suggested. Paleo brightened, but Dart instantly protested.
< No! I wanna fight him! Please? Please? It's not fair if Paleo gets to have all the fights! > he whined, ignoring the fact that Paleo had been in exactly one fight, and that he had been in that fight too. Atsina sighed and rolled her eyes. "Very well then. Dart, you may battle the stunky." she said, shrugging off her backpack.
< Yeah! Don't worry, I'm not gonna lose! I'm way strong, you'll see! > he panted excitedly, and turned to face the stunky with the fiercest expression he could muster. It was not particularly fierce. It was more...amusing, really. Atsina bit her lip to keep from laughing. "Alright then. Tackle!" she ordered, and Dart dashed forward.

The Stunky watched the scene before him, amused at how these two Pokemon were fighting for the right to fight. Honestly, it didn't really care which one of the two he fought first. They both looked equally strong, so either would be fine. About to suggest that the trainer should decide, the Zigzagoon beat it to speaking with his constant begging.
Yikes, a hyper little guy. It sweatdropped, taking a step back from feeling a bit left out of the conversation. Not like it mattered, it knew that they would find someway to figure out who would fight who.
<Oh, your 'way strong'? Well, I'm way WAY stronger.> It added, trying to mess with the childish mind before it. Winking over at Dart to show that it was only kidding, before the battle started. Tackle was it? Fine, I can take that. I don't think I can dodge it, with the way its running. It thought, knowing of the Zigzagoon's typical running pattern. Not being able to dodge, the only thing it could to was make sure its claws were nice and sharp before Scratching the normal type right after it tackled it.
The recoil from the attack hurt, so the Stunky was forced to jump a safe distance away. Watching Dart with curious eyes, wondering just what this little guy could do.

Dart giggled at the wink and wagged his bushy tail. He gave a jubulant cry too, when his tackle connected with the stunky, but immediately followed that up with a loud cry of pain. The scratch attack had been effective, and Dart gave his friend a hurt look and Growled loudly at it. His fur puffed up. No way he was going to be beaten!
Atsina frowned, worried about Dart. He was hyper, yes, but he was also small, and didn't think things through too well. She would not have ordered the growl, but it was done now. "Dart! Concentrate, don't lose your head! Tackle it again!" she commanded.
Dart gave a nod of assent and rocketed forward, straight for the stunky. He was determined to prove himself as the stronger of the two.

Giving a mysterious cackle, the Stunky gave the most mischevious smile that had ever crossed its face. This wasn't the best time to be around to merely watch and enjoy the battle, for as Dart ran forward to tackle, the Stunky turned tail.
Its large tail fluffing up as it flashed its rear end for a quick second before releasing a noxious and Poisonous Gas over at the Zigzagoon, but right after it gave off this smell, it was tackled by Dart into the cold ground around it. Easily it got right back up, unwilling to back down.
<He he heee.> It chuckled, awaiting yet another strong reaction out of the Pokemon and crew.

Atsina turned away at the smell, and took several steps back. Paleo also floated away from the gas. He moved closer to Atsina, no longer so intent on the battle. Dart, in the thick of it, stopped his running and coughed violently, his eyes watering. It had been a harsh attack at close range. He took the full hit of it, and it was only a miracle that he wasn't poisoned. Dart got to his feet unsteadily.
Atsina frowned. The stunky had just become alot more dangerous. She knew she didn't have any antidotes in her pack. If Dart or Paleo got poisoned, they would have to immediately run for the town and the pokemon center. "Dart, come back! Stop, I will forfeit this fight." she said. Dart, shaken and weak, came over to her and buried himself in her arms as she bent down. Atsina picked him up and stood. "You win, stunky. We will go now." she said quietly, shouldering her pack. Paleo floated away behind her, shooting the stunky a final glance. Dart lifted his head, but didn't speak. The attack had shaken him badly, and his confidence had fled.

(( I'd like to mention that Steel types don't get poisoned, in case you didn't know. ^^' But, Uh...Next Pokémon then? )) In the middle of the path rested a large clump of fur. Its tannish tint was completely messed up and turned even darker from the melted snow. Though it was soaked, it looked as if it was dead-like. For upon closer inspection its eyes remained shut tightly, and its body was curled into a small ball. The position it was in looked as if it was trying to fend off the cold, but a small movement of the claw showed that it was alive. Weather it was sick or not wasn't for anyone to judge, knowing these Pokemon's nature's it probably fell off a branch while sleeping. "Slaaaaak..." It moaned to itself, burying its head into its large arms. Sighing in contentment from the warmth that it gave, despite the blanket of snow that surrounded its body.

((I forgot about that...but that's alright.))
The three travelers all noticed the pokemon at the same time. Dart, still cradled in Atsina's arms, stared at it. But he didn't move to investigate, still wary from his last encounter with a wild pokemon. Paleo, on the other hand, was willing to move closer. < Is it dead, Atsina? > he asked, noting it's lack of movement and the fact that it was soaked.
Atsina frowned. "No, it's a Slakoth. They're very slow moving and lazy." she said, and knelt near it. She put Dart down, and he sniffed the inert pokemon. Atsina gently shook it. She didn't fear a sudden attack from it, as she knew these pokemon were slow to attack, even when touched by a trainer. "Excuse me, are you alright? You look like you're freezing." she said, noting it's curled up position and it's soft moan. The poor thing.

Yes, one of the lazyiest Pokemon in existence wouldn't even dare to touch the girl. Her own skin was actually very warm, and it instinctivly moved closer for warmth, its eyes opened half way to only see a part of her legs and the snow around it.
Not even caring to lift its head, it began speaking in a slurred dialog.
<I think so....I can't feel my body, if that means anything.> Its large looking claws became hidden once again, under whatever warmth was left in its body. Having to do this every couple of seconds in order to have a sense of heat.

Atsina could barely understand it at first, but it slowly dawned on her that pokemon was in danger. It hadn't even bothered to raise it's head at her touch. Normally a wild Pokémon would flee at the sight of a trainer, never mind letting one get close enough to touch them. Atsina was rather shocked. "But, shouldn't you be hibernating? Or sleeping in a warm sheltered area? Why are in the middle of the path, exposed? You'll die!" she asked, letting it cuddle her warm hand. She shivered as she felt the icy cold of it's wet fur.
Dart couldn't understand why it was cold. But then, he had enough sense not to get soaked by the snow. He also had a thick fur coat that kept him toasty warm even now as he stood in the snow at the road's edge. Paleo had no fur, but since he was a steel type he wasn't especially phased by cold. Yes, he felt it, and yes, it made him uncomfortable. However he knew that if he got too cold, he could just get Atsina to carry him, or go back into his pokeball. And so it was only Atsina of the three who felt the pain of the slakoth and wanted to help it.

Understanding that the girl meant no harm to it, it began to lift its entire body off the ground. It was a slow process, stumbling twice as it walked the tiny gap between it and Atsina and began to lay comfortably on her lap.
A relaxed sigh escaped its lips as it visibly let its body go limp. Only its eyes remained open, a sure sign that it was a still alive, along with the gentle breathing that came along with it.
<Your warmer than I, it is much appreciated...Maybe later I can return your kindness.> The Slakoth nuzzled its head into its long and furry arms, an ocean of warmth as this time it let out a strange yawn, not to harm anyone. It was an done on accident, perhaps its body reacting to the danger around it as a small bubble floated out of its mouth, and popping right in front Dart. Who it was facing at the moment it let out the attack.

Atsina settled to let the slakoth rest for a bit. She watched as it yawned. It took a while before she realized it was an attack. However there was nothing she could do about it. She could only watch as Dart slowly yawned in return. He started to sway slightly. Atsina thought quickly. She could order him to attack. He might be able to get one attack in before he collapsed. But she would get hurt too, and besides, the slakoth hadn't meant to attack.
Atsina winced as Dart fell to the ground, fast asleep. She sighed. "Would you like to escape this cold? Have regular, good meals? Be able to get stronger? I can offer you that." she asked quietly, shifting on the freezing ground. She reached a foot out and nudged Dart, trying to wake him. But he slumbered on.

The slakoth looked thoughtful for a moment, taking its dear time to process the words that it heard. As it was, all of those things sounded very nice, especially if you were freezing and half starved for who knows how long.
Another cold wind came whirling around the group, making the normal type shudder in response. Temporarily feeling warmer, before getting back to the same spot as it was before. A sigh escaped its lips as it lifted its head to look Atsina in the eyes, questioning , but otherwise numb of any emotion.
<It sounds nice...I could enjoy a life like that...> Though it wasn't the brightest out of all Pokemon, the common thought lingered in its mind if there was some sort of catch to this idea. Nothing was too good to be true, sad as it sounded, but something that it accepted.
<I'll like that a lot...> It mummured before resting its small head on the newbie trainer's lap once again.

Atsina could see she'd have to go very slow with this one. She couldn't tell if his sluggish responses were at normal speed, or if the cold was really affecting him. She sighed. "I'm a Pokémon trainer. You could become one of my Pokémon." she suggested slowly. Paleo had moved to hover near her head, and was watching the slakoth boredly. Atsina stretched her foot out again and prodded Dart. He didn't wake up. She knew that it might take a few tries to get the zigzagoon awake.
Atsina looked down at the slakoth. "You would be part of my team, like Dart and Paleo here. You'd be fed and cared for, but sometimes you'd have to fight." Might as well lay it all out for him. It would take the slakoth long enough to process her suggestion without her hiding details. In the end he'd have to choose. And Atsina hoped he choose soon, because the snow was starting to get very cold, and was seeping into her boots and pants.

The Slakoth sighed as it realized just what this girl was, a Pokemon trainer. How the Pokemon of those people were trained to such limits, honestly it had no idea if it would be able to live up to that potential. It was only a small Slakoth, compared to so many other types out there. That wasn't something it would bring up though, at least it was a win win situation.
It could live a life like that, and be happy. Maybe it would take some motivation, but somehow things would work out in the end. That thought was enough to nod its head slowly, before doing it in a more vigorous bobbing motion. Certain that this was the right thing to do, if it wanted to live much longer.
<I'll do it. Hopefully I won't have any....regrets in this.>
